TIME-LINE OF THE ILIAD AND THE ODYSSEY COMPARED

The Iliad, perhaps originally inscribed on a long parchment scroll, not unlike a Torah, and divided into 36 parts, each representing a lunation, eventually became partitioned into 24 books, each representing a letter of the Greek alphabet (after the digamma and the koppa had been dropped from use), sometime near 550 BC under the aegis of the Athenian Pisistratidae.

The scheme shown below is taken from the inside dust-jacket of Cedric H. Whitman's Homer and the Heroic Tradition. Cambridge, Mass: Harvard University Press, 1967.
